Transworld Skateboarding’s Skate and Create

Monday, August 18th, 2008

DVS Transworld Skate and CreateTransworld Skateboarding recently held a nine day contest with four of the top teams in skateboarding; DVS, Osiris, Emerica, and Globe. Each team assembled their top five riders together inside a private warehouse in Vista, CA where they had to create skateboarding obstacles under a certain budget. They had full creative control of their own project but had to obtain photos and video footage of it all and turn it in on the due date.

DVS took the 1st place honors, thus the Daewon Song cover on the new Transworld Skateboarding issue. You really have to see all four of the team’s videos though, each team has its own unique style and theme set to their own projects. Every video is amazing in its own way, check them out and decide for yourself which is your favorite.

Sometimes I’m amazed at what they were pulling off in some of the trippy lighted or low lighted areas. I would think it would add that much more difficulty to trying to pull off anything on some to those obstacles. Most notably for me, Chris Haslam’s wall rides to rail grinds near the end of the Globe video. You’ll see what I mean; honestly Chris Haslam and Daewon Song are freaking machines. How they do some of the things they do beats me.

In my opinion DVS’, and Globe’s videos were the most well put together. But Osiris’s concept and John Rattray’s fire ring stunt were off the hook and original. Last but not least, Emerica’s interpretation was trippy and definitely something I haven’t seen before either.

Skate and Create is honestly one of the most unique contests I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve never seen anything like this done before and it was a spectacular and creative idea. I truly can’t wait to see who next year’s teams will be and what the outcome will be. The skateboarding was incredibly top notch as well. Check it all out for yourself. I guarantee you will dig it.

Dudes Dudes Dudes from DVS

Friday, May 9th, 2008

dvs shoe company logoDVS shoe company just released there newest DVD entitled “Dudes, Dudes, Dudes“. First off, I would like to say that if you plan on viewing this video directly from there website you will be there for quite a while! Maybe there are a few bugs to work out or something but I tried it on various computers and it took forever to load. Not to mention it would play and pause throughout the video.

The video is also viewable on YouTube, Google Video, and all the typical obvious video uploading websites out there. DVS knows that the DVD age is near it’s end and basically came to the conclusion that if you can’t beat them, join them. They threw the entire video up online for free for your viewing pleasure. It’s without a doubt worth your time as well.

Torey Pudwill ends the video with his best part ever. My personal favorite section of this flick is the U.S. montage with basically all the riders that didn’t get full parts in the video. There were so many gnarly tricks in the mix of this montage. Daewon, as usual, will leave your jaw dropped. Kenny Hoyle will leave you wanting more. And Jeron Wilson will surprise you!

The video I guess was a little on the short-side but it’s still good. Plus, they’d released their full length film “SKATE MORE” not too long ago, so another full length video wasn’t really expected. For a free promo video it’s rad, I honestly wouldn’t mind having it in a hard copy version to watch it in the old DVD player of mine. Big ups to T-Puds holding down the last part.

Jordy Smith in High Demand

Monday, January 28th, 2008

jordy smithIt’s good to be Jordy Smith right now. Having already signed a seven-figure deal late last year with O’neill, the 19 yr. old Smith recently hooked a deal up with DVS shoes and is in the process of putting out his signature pair of sandals. It seems like everyone is trying to get a piece of the up-and-comer that many are calling the best young surfer to hit the tour since Slater. They have good reason too. Smith absolutely crushed the ‘QS in 2007 setting an all time points record with 14,575. His best seven results averaged an amazing 2,082 points per event, which included wins on four different continents.

With the ASP World Title being dominated by Americans, Australians and Hawaiians over the past 30 years only time will tell if Smith can follow in the footsteps of World Champions Shaun Tomson and Martin Potter by bringing the title back to South Africa one day. South Africa has always produced great surfers and it has always been hard for them traveling internationally, but Jordy is leading a new generation of rippers that are sure to shake up the rest of the surfing world. One thing that is certain, 2008 will be one of the most exciting years in history on the ASP World Tour!
