Surfing Con-Man Needs to Go Down

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

surfing con manYou may or may not have heard about the ongoing con being pulled by some thieving crook against those within the surf industry. If you haven’t heard yet, you will in just a second. And if you have, more details on the latest attempt have just been put out by our friends at Surfing Mag. The bottom-line in all of this? We need everyone’s help now to keep this low-life from continuing to prey on the goodwill and generosity of those he’s meaning to rob.

For the last year and a half or so, a slimy, slick scam artist has been contacting people within the industry and giving them some sob story that goes something like this: “Hey this is [insert pro surfer's name here], I’m stuck at LAX/ my car just got towed/ I’m stranded in a foreign country. Could you wire me $450/ buy me an airline ticket?” While most who have been contacted by this creepster have declined, some have unfortunately been duped into sending the money. Evan Slater and the rest of the crew at Surfer have been doing their best to put the kabosh on this, so far to no avail. The police have essentially been unwilling to help as they have given the response- “If we don’t know where he is, there’s nothing we can do about it. We’re not going to spend hours waiting for a guy who might show up when it’s a $300 crime. The best thing to do is educate the public so no one falls for it again.”
Well, a number of $300 crimes begin to add up to a whole lot more. Of most importance, however, is the fact that this crook is blatantly violating the rights of his victims and he needs to be stopped.
Here is some info that Surfing put out in order to raise awareness and hopefully lead to finding out who this is-

- He frequently adopts the following personas or drops these names: Nathan, Christian and Greyson Fletcher, Brad Gerlach, Dino and Kolohe Andino, Chris Malloy, Adam Wickwire and John-John Florence. Don’t be surprised if he latches onto another well known father/son combo in Matt and Ford Archbold.

- Names he’s given include: Shawn Hontin and Kenneth Gaul. He’s also tried to have money transferred to a company called “Going Places Travel”. They’re probably fake names but still worth keeping in mind.

- He plays on his victim’s compassion, often creating fake situations that make you feel sorry for him: Car got towed, death in the family, stranded in another country, wrongly imprisoned, etc, etc.

- If he thinks he’s sucked you in, he’ll get more aggressive.

So friends, we need anyone with any ideas or thoughts to come forward on this. Also, be aware of this situation just in case you happen to wind up as the next target of this criminal. Together we’ll put a stop to this fool once and for all!

30 Second Barrels: Cory Lopez Lost in Africa

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

corey lopez getting shacked in africa Unreal…. That’s all you can really say about the video Lost.TV released a few days ago of Cory Lopez at Skeleton Bay in Africa. It was Cory’s first wave of the day and will be part of the upcoming Lost film: 5′5″ x 19 1/4″ REDUX. Upon first site of the clip, a friend of mine asked me “how do you top that?”…You don’t, you just paddle back out and do it again.

This is also the same break featured in the latest Surfing Mag that had me frothing at the mouth the moment I laid eyes on it. Credit for the wave discovery goes to Brian Gable, who won this year’s Google Earth Challenge that was put on by Surfing Mag. I’ve had my eye on Western Africa for awhile now and this just goes to show I need to hurry the hell up and get out there.

While it doesn’t appear Cory’s shacked the entire time, there’s easily 20-30 seconds of barrel time on this wave. Apparently, he got even more tube time on every wave following this one…. Unreal

Is Surfing Afflicted?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

In between sessions of highly contested ping-pong battles at the 5ones office last night, I decided to take advantage of the break in action and flip open the April 2008 edition of Surfing Magazine. Particularly stoked on finding the ‘North Shore In Black and White’ section, I found myself thumbing through the pages and making my way to my intended destination. No sooner than my mag-browsing sixth sense alerts me that I’m only pages away from said section do I end up face to face with an advertisement for Affliction Clothing.

Did I miss the boat on this one? Is there something that I just am not seeing when it comes to Affliction and surfing? To be clear, my issue isn’t at all with Affliction. Clearly they are doing something right when it comes to marketing and their bottom line. It’s everywhere and continues to spread like wildfire. It was just surprising to find myself toe-to-toe with an ad for skull-patch laden black leather boots while trying to lose myself in the North Shore ‘07/’08 season recap.

Where is this connection between surfing and Affliction coming from? I’m fully aware of the crossover made by many wave-riders into the blossoming sport of Mixed Martial-Arts and have all of the respect in the world equally for those who have been passionate about the sport for years as those who have just recently taken up training. However, this is different than the connection between RVCA and BJ Penn. It’s nearly impossible for me to see anything positive whatsoever brought to the surfing community/industry by the infiltration of a brand like Affliction that thrives on the ‘tough-guy’ image into our sport.

I realize Affliction is just doing it’s job by seeking to capitalize on the growth and expansion of MMA into other markets. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I guess I never expected the decision-makers at Surfing to open their publication to a brand that in my opinion doesn’t have any business, other than business, being there. Hopefully Surfing Magazine realizes that surfing is about setting trends, not following them.
